A Brief History of University Park, Maryland

University Park is a town located in Prince George's County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,318.

University Park is located at 38°58'17" North, 76°56'36" West (38.971381, -76.943399)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

The current mayor of University Park is John Brunner.

University Park has one elementary school, a public tennis court and a park. It is bordered by College Park, Hyattsville and certain unincorporated parts of Prince George's County.


As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,318 people, 877 households, and 637 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,790.0/km² (4,677.5/mi²). There are 898 housing units at an average density of 693.4/km² (1,812.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 85.46% White, 7.29% African American, 0.26% Native American, 3.67% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.04% from other races, and 2.29% from two or more races. 5.57% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 877 households out of which 33.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.6% are married couples living together, 8.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% are non-families. 20.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the town the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 96.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $89,450, and the median income for a family is $96,349. Males have a median income of $62,375 versus $43,083 for females. The per capita income for the town is $40,402. 3.5% of the population and 1.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.9% of those under the age of 18 and 1.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
