A Brief History of Takoma Park, Maryland
The Davis Warner Inn, Tacoma Park, Maryland
Available records suggest that John B. [J.B.] and Verlinda Davis, who operated a store at the corner of Carroll Avenue and University Boulevard (then called "Old Bladensburg Road"), built this historic Stick Style house in about 1855 (circa 1850 - 1875). The Stick Style of architecture was popular for only a brief period and is known for the use of relatively simple exterior ornamentation that is reminiscent of the interior structural timbers that support the building. Post-Stick Style architects took the exterior expression of structural supports in two distinctly divergent directions. Frank Lloyd Wright simplified the expression of structural elements in an effort to make his buildings "true and honest." Victorian architects took structural ornamentation to the extreme and added fanciful gingerbread detailing at every opportunity. The J.B. Davis guestroom, located in the northeast corner of the second floor, is furnished with mid-1800's antiques. The Verlinda Davis room is located on the southeast corner of the second floor.
After the original builders sold the property in the 1880s the house was used variously as a veterans hospital, brothel, speakeasy, and gambling house into the 1930s. The house was the scene of an ambush and murder during Prohibition when a rival gang attempted to kill Joey Fontana, a bootlegger who used the house as the headquarters for his illegal activities. When they mistakenly shot the paperboy instead of Mr. Fontana, the local police stormed the house, confiscated alcohol and guns, and closed the illicit business. The Fontana Room, located in the northwest corner of the second floor, is furnished with early 20th Century antiques.
