A Brief History of Marlton, Maryland
St. Paul's Moravian Church was started back in 1970 by Rev. Floyd Peterson and a handful of faithful people who had a vision of growing a place of worship in Marlton. The first service was held at Frederick Douglass High School on August 16, 1970. The Official Founding for the initial structure, which would later serve the Marlton community, took place on January 31, 1971. That structure was completed in November of 1972.
St. Paul's got a new pastor in Rev. Gordon Sommers who served from 1974-1978. After he was promoted, Rev. Robert Sawyer took over and pastored from 1978-1985. During his tenure, the Children's Christian Center was started in 1982 and a decision to hire a second pastor in the person of Rev. Mark Herr was made. Rev. Herr was with us from 1983-1987 and shared his expertise on the organ and with sermon puppetry. Plans were made to build a new and larger sanctuary turning the original sanctuary into a fellowship hall. The new sanctuary was dedicated in 1985. When Rev. Sawyer was promoted to a higher position at Home Moravian Church in Winston Salem NC, Rev. Gerald Harris took over the reins in 1986 for the next two years. In 1989, our present pastor, Rev. Dr. Steve O. Nicholas was brought to us and continues today to help us grow a Christ-centered family church serving the community.
On Sunday, January 20, 2002, St. Paul's Church celebrated a milestone - our 31st Anniversary as a congregation serving the Marlton community! In honor of our anniversary, the Rev. Jon Peterson returned to St. Paul's as our guest preacher. Jon was a member of St. Paul's when his father, Rev. Floyd Peterson, served as our founding pastor in the early 1970's! Pastor Jon graduated from Frederick Douglass High School in 1973, and he was our very first Sunday School Superintendent! Rev. Peterson, who presently serves as pastor of Covenant Moravian Church in North Carolina, led us in a traditional Moravian Lovefeast, and delivered an inspirational message, "See the Church, be the Church!" What a wondrous and historical occasion it was!
