A Brief History of Halethorpe, Maryland

Over ninety years ago on July 1st, 1906, the feast of the Most precious Blood, St. , Dominicís Parish came into being! The birth of the Parish was marked by the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Now ninety one years later, years of struggle - yet years of great joy since so many benefited by them - Godís glory has been made manifest. Our country, our city and our community have been blessed: many have been shown Godís ways; many have been fed with the Bread of Life; many have drawn strength and wisdom from Christís teachings.

All things are shaped by divine plans. The historical background of the last ninety years is a cyclorama against which we may see the development of St. Dominicís parish. Transportation has played a significant role in the development of the American city. People follow transportation. By 1893 trolley service was begun in Baltimore and toward the end of the nineties the city was preparing a network of rails. In this transit period Baltimoreans began to move to more pleasant surroundings in the suburbs. In a reasonable time, many parishes were established as suburban though they are now within city limits. In this general movement, early residents of St. Dominicís parish came from the densely populated parishes of St. Jamesí and St. Johnís along Harford Road .
