To inform you Eldersburg, MD, here is a brief history you can read that will give you a glimpse into the past of the community.

A Brief History of Eldersburg, Maryland

The word "history" is defined as an account of what has happened in the life or development of a group of people, countries, or institutions. Obviously, many changes have taken place throughout history. The saying, "The only constant is change," is as true today as it was when time began.
Certainly anyone who has lived in the Eldersburg, Maryland, area for even a few years has to be amazed by the number of changes that have taken place. New housing developments dot the countryside with school constructions and renovations keeping pace. Grassy fields have given way to department stores, banks, fast food restaurants and, of course, churches.

Change also has been a large part of Holy Spirit Lutheran Church since its beginning. Our Church was formed a little more than 30 years ago. Since then, we have periodically grown and settled in; moved; and then grown and settled some more.

When our congregation began in 1965, it was known as "The Lutheran Chapel of the Holy Spirit." Leadership was provided by Pastor Walter Tappert, a Board of American Mission Developer from the Lutheran Church of America. Pastor Tappert was called directly from the seminary in June, 1965. The first worship service was conducted in October, 1965, in the Knights of Columbus Hall on Liberty Road in Harrisonville, Maryland. Fifty-four adults and thirty children were charter members. Of this group, three families remain active in the Church to this day: the Vearas, the Clises and the Schneiders. The original charter petitioning the Delaware-Maryland Synod for status as a congregation was signed by all 84 Charter Members and is an important piece of the congregation's history.
