A brief History of District Heights, Maryland

Vice Mayor James L. Walls, Jr. is the youngest person ever in the History of the City of District Heights, MD to serve on the City Council and Vice Mayor. He currently has the prestigious honor of representing the Largest Ward in the City, which includes the City's Downtown Business District.

Vice Mayor Walls has received accolades from the Maryland House of Delegates, State of Alabama House of Representatives, City of Cleveland, and the Key to the City of West Palm Beach, FL for his outstanding commitment and dedication to Public & Community Service.

He holds memberships in many organizations such as NAACP, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., Prince Hall F&AM Masons, Maryland Democratic Party, Prince George's County Municipal Association, Maryland Municipal League, National League of Cities, Maryland Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, and the World Conference of Mayors to just name a few.

Vice Mayor was elected to the Board of Directors for the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (NBC-LEO) during the 2004 NLC Congress of Cities Conference held in Indianapolis, Indiana. As the region III Director, he represents Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Washington, DC, and Delaware.

In the fall of 2003, Vice Mayor Walls received a Presidential Appointment from President George W. Bush to serve on the United States Selective Service Board. In 2004, Governor Bob Ehrlich, Jr. Appointed Vice Mayor Walls to serve on the Maryland State Board of Foresters.

Vice Mayor Walls is an Alumnus of the American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL). In 2003, he was selected out of a thousand National, State and Local elected official candidates to travel with a US delegation to the Republic of Hungary and the Republic of Romania in Eastern Europe.
